Despite advancements in traditional trauma-focused treatments, many veterans continue to experience emotional injuries that remain only partially addressed. This piece highlights why new approaches are urgently needed and why preparation across the field must begin now.

Drawing on emerging clinical evidence, the piece details how psychedelic therapies may enable veterans to engage with traumatic memories and emotional material in ways not always achievable through conventional care. At the same time, it underscores that these therapies are not ready solutions. Their safe and ethical use will depend on coordinated readiness: Providers trained to navigate the unique characteristics of altered states, veterans equipped with clear and culturally attuned expectations, and healthcare systems structured to ensure continuity, safety, and equitable access.

As regulatory conversations continue and the field evolves, thoughtful preparation is essential. By aligning provider training, patient education, and system-level design, the mental health community can help ensure that emerging therapies are implemented responsibly and in service of the veterans who stand to benefit most.

“The potential approval and adoption of psychedelic treatment represents an opportunity to build on existing clinical knowledge, workforce strengths, and healthcare infrastructure through partnerships that support training, oversight, and safe implementation.”
